Exploring Regenerative Landscaping in Colorado’s Unique Environment
Colorado is a state with rugged beauty and a distinct climate and terrain that is home to a variety of unique plants. These plants are used in Habitat Guild’s regenerative landscaping practices. They work to create not only visually stunning outdoor spaces, but also contribute to the resiliency of Colorado’s ecosystem.
Regenerative landscapes are more than just gardens or outdoor spaces; they represent a holistic approach to land management and design that seeks to restore and enhance the ecological health of an area. By harnessing principles of ecology, permaculture, and sustainable design, our landscapes aim to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, conserve water, and reduce environmental impact.
Soil Health
Regenerative landscaping places a strong emphasis on improving and maintaining soil health. Healthy soil is essential for plant growth, water retention, and nutrient cycling. Mindful of the interconnected web of life within our soils, which depend on the exchange of nutrients and water from the surface, we can think of the system as a living organism unto itself requiring food, water, and protection to survive. By mitigating the widespread use of landscape fabric and using mulches that can breakdown and help to build soil, overall health is improved. And, plants are happier and live longer, and landscapes thrive while requiring less inputs and resources than traditional landscapes.
Native Plants
There are many benefits to using Colorado native plants for home and commercial landscapes. For one, they are already naturally adapted to Colorado’s climates, soils and environmental conditions. Choosing native plants allows you to work with nature as it is intended. This is rather than trying to grow plants that are not suited to our local conditions. Native plants create a sustainable landscape and decrease your water use. And you’ll have no need for fertilizer because they are more resistant to pests and disease. We use a variety of native flowers, grasses, and trees in our designs.
Biodiversity
Regenerative landscaping aims to increase biodiversity by creating a variety of habitats that support a wide range of plant and animal species. Diverse ecosystems are more resilient to environmental changes including Colorado’s temperature fluctuations and seasons of drought. Therefore, diversity leads to a more sustainable environment. You may notice more creatures, both land and air, visiting your outdoor space because of this.
Water Conservation
Efficient water management is a key consideration in regenerative landscaping, especially in Colorado where we often face water scarcity. We use rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, and xeriscaping to minimize water usage and promote water conservation. Landscape water use accounts for over 50% of residential water used across the state. By planting less-thirsty native plants, we can use less water.
Natural Processes
Regenerative landscaping works with natural processes, seeking to mimic the way ecosystems function in the wild. This includes promoting natural nutrient cycles, using organic materials, and allowing for the natural regeneration of plant communities. This takes time but is always worth it in the long run.
